How to choose a rebar detailing company in Dubai and the UAE

Rebar shop drawings and bar bending schedules sit on the critical path of every concrete frame. If they are late or wrong, steel is cut twice and pours slip. Before you award a rebar detailing package to a company in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, these eight questions will tell you most of what you need to know.

1. Do they detail to your project's standards?

Most UAE projects specify BS 8666 for scheduling and BS 4449 reinforcement, but some follow ACI-based specifications. Ask which standards the detailer normally uses and how they handle a specification that differs. A detailer who asks for your specification before quoting is a good sign.

2. Who checks the drawings before they are issued?

Errors in rebar shop drawings are expensive: wrong bars get cut and delivered, and pours are delayed. Ask whether every drawing is checked by someone other than the person who drew it, and what they check against.

3. Do the bar marks match the bar bending schedule?

The placing drawing and the BBS must use the same bar marks. If they are prepared separately, or by different people, mismatches creep in. Ask to see a sample drawing and its schedule side by side.

4. Can the BBS go straight to your rebar yard?

A useful schedule includes the member, bar mark, size, number, shape code, bending dimensions, cutting length and weight. Ask whether they can match the format your yard already uses.

5. How do they handle congested areas?

Column-beam junctions, transfer beams and coupler zones are where detailing goes wrong. Ask how they check that bars can actually be fixed and concreted, and whether they raise RFIs when the design does not fit.

6. Can they issue packages in your pour sequence?

You rarely need the whole building at once. A good detailer issues drawings by zone and level so the rebar for the next pour is always ready first.

7. How fast are revisions?

Consultant comments and design changes are normal. Ask how quickly revisions are turned round and how changes are marked, so the yard knows which bars to recut.

8. Are they close enough to meet?

Most detailing is delivered digitally, but being able to attend a coordination meeting or visit site in Dubai or Sharjah at short notice saves time when something does not fit.
